Direct Marketing Accounts for One in Every 11 New Jobs in America

- The increase in jobs attributed to direct marketing continues to outpace overall U.S. employment growth by almost four to one, Direct Marketing Association President & CEO H. Robert Wientzen will announce next week during the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) 83rd Annual Conference & Exhibition. According to The DMA's Economic Impact study, from 2000 - 2005, direct marketing industry employment growth is expected to increase at an annual rate of 4.7 percent, almost four times the overall U.S. annual employment growth rate of 1.3 percent.

"For every job that is created in the mainstream economy, 11 jobs will be created in the direct marketing industry," announced Wientzen. "Direct marketing is no longer unseen in the U.S. economy. Its ability to deliver accountability and build relationships with customers has made it a winner as we move from the Information Age to the Digital Age."

In 2000, more than 14.7 million workers will be employed throughout the U.S. economy as a result of direct marketing activities - 8.0 million in consumer direct marketing and 6.7 million in business-to-business. By 2005, an expected 18.5 million jobs will be available.

The Internet will continue to be the fastest-growing medium of the direct marketing labor force, reporting a 36.3 percent annual growth rate from 2000 - 2005. Radio follows, with 5.8 percent of all direct marketing workers, and direct mail is next, with a 4.4 percent increase in employment projected over the next five years.

California leads the nation in direct marketing-related jobs in 2000 by employing more than 1.66 million workers, followed by New York (1.0 million), Texas (1.0 million), Florida (857,916), and Illinois (696,647).

HP Announces DeepCanyon to Discontinue Operations

- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that DeepCanyon, a wholly owned subsidiary, will discontinue operations as of Oct. 5, 2000. The Seattle-based DeepCanyon provides Internet-based tools, services and research resources for marketing professionals. DeepCanyon markets content from many leading market research companies. In addition, it provides primary research, its own marketing information and other marketing and competitive analysis tools.

DeepCanyon was spun out of HP in December 1999 with the objective of obtaining external funding. Since it has been unsuccessful in securing second-round financing, HP has decided to discontinue its operation.

Editor's note:- I never liked DeepCanyon which seemed completely useless on the few occasions that I tried to look at it. It won't be missed.
