- NTL to launch free UK-wide Internet service

- Communications company NTL today announced its intention to offer its residential telephony customers genuinely free, unlimited Internet access throughout the UK – via PC or TV. Called ntlworld, the new free Internet service will go live on Monday 17 April 2000 for PC users – just six weeks from now. The TV Internet service is due to follow shortly afterwards. ntlworld features no ISP subscription charge, no call connection charge and no Internet call charges.

Internet call charges have been one of the biggest brakes on the growth of Internet usage at home and on the development of e-commerce in the UK. NTL will be the first major company to launch a genuinely free Internet access service in the UK. Barclay Knapp, NTL Chief Executive Officer said: "NTL has a vision to bring the Internet to all UK homes – either via the PC, or the TV. ntlworld will help the UK in a drive to lead the world in making e-commerce, e-entertainment and e-education available to everyone. We're able to announce this today because we own a high-quality national network and have a track-record of providing innovative services at great prices. And you don't get much better than free."

The TextToTalk conversion service offers high quality voicing with an economical cost of three cents per page. TextToTalk offers free introductory conversions of up to 30 pages of text and is available exclusively through the World Wide Web. TextToTalk offers the benefits of computer voicing in the universal MP3 format.

TextToTalk converts written text into audio MP3 files. These can be played on a Diamond Rio, Creative Labs Nomad, RCA Lyra, or other MP3 player while driving, riding, recreating, relaxing, or studying. Initial user response to TextToTalk's quality, features and pricing has been outstanding. "We have users saying they have listened to thousands of pages they would not have had time to read", said Kathleen James, TextToTalk Marketing Vice-President.

Editor's comment:- busy marketers should now have no problems justifying a Diamond Rio as an essential business expense, so they can read/listen to essential strategic documents:-)

TechMarcom Opens Online Discussion Forum

- TechMarcom, Inc. an alternative hybrid of independent agency and freelance high-tech PR specialist has opened an online discussion forum where public relations professionals and tech start-ups can meet online to discuss problems, trends, and exchange ideas and solutions. The agency, headed by veteran publicist Jon Boroshok, was created to serve the needs of tech start-ups that and new dot-coms that are often unable to afford the fees of larger marketing agencies.

"While many tech PR agencies aren't taking on new clients with retainers of less than $15,000 a month, we specialize in providing senior PR professionals for start-ups at affordable rates," said TechMarcom president Boroshok. "We're filing a void in the market. Recent clients Cognos and GeePS.com decided to take advantage of the ability to buy PR services on an a la carte basis." TechMarcom was created to provide an alternative for startups lacking the budget for big campaigns. Unlike most traditional agencies that require a monthly retainer, TechMarcom is part of a growing new generation of independent agencies that provide service at affordable contract, project, or hourly rates.

showtheplanet.com Launches Web Community for Businesses Not Yet Selling Online

- Showtheplanet.com today announced the launch of an Internet e-business community geared towards businesses as yet uninitiated to selling online. The launch comes as a response to the substantial number of businesses simply overwhelmed by the largely developer-geared resources available online and still uncertain of potential e-commerce opportunities.

"From our experience, the majority of small businesses prefer to do their own research and online development as opposed to hiring a firm to do it," says company president, Christopher Rawluk. "They are simply overwhelmed by the complexity and shear volume of e-commerce and development related information available online. As the majority of businesses are small businesses, it seemed obvious to us that developing a web based community for businesses looking to make the move online and succeed was not only necessary but would be a much needed resource."

The showtheplanet.com web community is designed to be an easy-to-use resource for business people who are looking to take advantage of technology opportunities. It features a comprehensive resource base suited to businesses with a broad range of experience, from existing "bricks and mortar" businesses to entrepreneurs at the idea stage of an online start-up.

Editor's note:- in a recent article why are most Sun resellers invisible on the web? I surmised that marketing ignorance and "paralysis from over analysis" were key factors in retarding thousands or computer resellers getting onto the web. There's no excuse now, because these guys in showtheplanet.com have made the process even simpler.

EDS Debuts Industry-First Internet Services For Any Business On the Web

- Web sites are crashing and getting hacked. IT staffs are scrambling to fix complex problems fast on tight budgets. Customers find getting to Web sites slow and frustrating. These are the daily crises of the Internet economy. Enter the EDS Web Computing Suite of Services, a first-of-its-kind, power-packed package of e-business services for any company – manufacturing or services, dot.com or Fortune 500. EDS today debuts its offering at technology forums across the United States, as part of the company's aggressive go-to-market strategy to relieve the growing stresses of this critical market space.

Clients are moving from a self-managed environment to a dedicated hosting environment and application provisioning and eventually "enterprise provisioning." Companies are simultaneously moving their businesses to the Web and require even greater integrated services to meet the rigor of strenuous and evolving e-business demands. The newly launched Web Computing Suite of Services offers the information technology industry's only end-to-end computing service solution that can deliver comprehensive web hosting, security, network services, and application services provisioning. EDS provides this Web Computing Suite of Services directly to clients or indirectly using a wholesale model for companies who want to provide additional value to their current clients. Through an array of wholesale Web and application hosting services, business of all sizes can take advantage of the EDS Web computing environment.

The EDS Web Computing Suite of Services includes the following:
  • Application Service Provisioning (ASP) consists of two customized offerings for enterprises or packaged rental applications to appeal to all-sized Internet businesses
  • Network and Security Services delivers the more robust, fully managed services that clients are seeking today
  • Web Hosting features scaleable solutions that provide the support and delivery environment needed for today's critical business Internet functions

"The Internet will be at the center of most, if not all, businesses," said Gopi Bala, senior director of E-Sourcing Strategies at the Yankee Group. "To meet customer demand, service providers must be able to deliver the full range of services for any business -- big or small -- through either in-house capabilities or leading-edge partnerships. The 'mission-critical' nature of Web activities means that all firms must bank on a highly secure, stable, fault-tolerant environment to ensure business continuity. Service providers with the experience, scale, vision, and execution strengths that go beyond the delivery of commodity services and start to add true 'Internet value' for their customers will emerge as the principal architects of tomorrow's emerging economy."

Editor's note:- it's good to see that solid software development companies are now moving into this market. Managing a large web site is like owning and managing a complex software product which has to interface with all other parts of the business environment. Most web sites I've seen fail because they aren't managed by people who have run large software projects. Marketers should aim to steer the boat, rather than getting into the boat building business.
