The Coming Dot-Com Crash

- In a decidedly unscientific survey, I asked several Net-savvy people to name companies in each of several broad e-commerce categories, including toys, cars, pets and drugs. In half the categories no one could name a single merchant. In others, no more than two merchants could be recalled. These results confirmed my theory that there are too many dot-coms and that few are establishing awareness among consumers despite the glut of advertising on television, online, on radio, in print and on billboards. This, I believe, means they're headed for a fall.

Getting Marketing E-mail Read

- An estimated 9.4 billion e-mail messages are sent in the United States each day. Peppers and Rogers Group, a Connecticut-based company that specializes in "customer relationship management," says it has the keys for getting consumers to open what might otherwise be unread, and deleted, e-mail. They have published a report, entitled "One to One Email: How To Implement An Effective One-to-One Email Campaign."

E-Commerce Merchant Services: Telcos' Greatest Assets May Not Be What They Think, Say Analysts

- Growth in the market for providing services to Internet merchants will be rapid according to new research from Ovum, the independent telecommunications and IT research and consulting company. Ovum predicts that worldwide revenues from e-merchant services will reach $27 billion by 2006. But Ovum warns service providers such as telcos and ISPs that to succeed in this market they must exploit their trusted brands and large customer bases, as well as traditional assets such as network performance and expertise as service operators.

WAP Overhyped & Undersupported

- The massive hype in the cellular industry over WAP (wireless application protocol) is over the top, mainly because there are so few suitable services available to support the technology at the moment, according to research due to be published shortly. The research, carried out by Across Wireless and International Data Corp. (IDC), says that the uptake of WAP by the European mobile market will be delayed by a lack of appropriate services - leading to disappointment in the marketplace.

The Portal Race Is Over -- The Race For Online Marketing Dollars Is Just Beginning

The race for portal dominance is over. While traffic continues to surge at AOL, Yahoo!, and MSN, the other broad-based portals -- AltaVista, Excite, GO.com, Lycos, and Snap.com -- are showing modest gains at best. With traffic fracturing into two camps -- a few broad-based portals and thousands of vertical sites -- a new battle for online marketing dollars is unfolding. A recent Report from Forrester Research, Inc. predicts that 57% of all online ad spending will flow to vertical sites and affiliate networks by 2004 as more retailers seek greater returns from their investments.

"There is a sea change underway in spending for online marketing," said Charlene Li, senior analyst in Media & Entertainment Research at Forrester. "Companies love the visibility that AOL and Yahoo! deliver, but they need a much higher customer acquisition rate than these broad-based portals can offer. To realize some return from their Internet ad spending, retailers are demanding pay-for-performance deals that only vertical portals and affiliates can deliver. This is where the ad dollars will go over the next five years."

First Dot-Com Super Bowl Likely to Be the Last

- "This year's NFL championship contest is being called the first 'dot-com Super Bowl' because so many Web-based firms have taken ads on the broadcast, but this first dot-com Super Bowl also is likely to be the last," says Andrew Robinson, a partner with Diamond Technology Partners Inc. "Between this year's game and next year's, changes in the marketing practices of dot-com and of offline businesses will emerge to significantly re-shape the competitive landscape... By next year, we won't think of it as a 'dot-com Super Bowl' because the likelihood is 100% of the ads will be, in a strong sense, dot-com. There will be little to distinguish the traditional offline players from the online players as the offline businesses integrate their online and offline components," said Robinson.

Web Marketing Book Brings Hope for Websites Needing Traffic

- With over 13 million domain names registered throughout the world, many Websites are struggling to survive on the World Wide Web. A new book called Web Marketing Applied, by Internet marketing guru Joe Tracy, is teaching Webmasters and Internet marketers key techniques to stand out on the information superhighway. "A survey by Nielson/Net Ratings found that the average Web surfer only visits 10 unique sites a month," says Tracy. "It's important that your Website is one of those 10." Tracy says that the tremendous growth in the number of Websites on the Internet is making it very hard for some good sites to get noticed. His book, which is 300 pages with 10 chapters, covers 101 marketing ideas in Chapter 2 alone. Tracy also discusses offensive marketing techniques, defensive marketing techniques, the role of public relations in Web marketing, and other crucial elements that Websites need for success.
